Under the aegis of the TÜBİTAK-4007 Terme Science, Art and Culture Festival, three different workshops with environmental awareness and sustainability themes were held on 17–18 October 2025. The events attracted strong participation from primary and secondary school students, and offered hands-on training in waste management, water purification, and carbon-water footprint topics.

In the “Recycling Waste and Circular Economy” workshop, students designed artistic and functional objects by reusing plastic, paper, metal, and organic waste. During the workshop, the importance of a circular economy approach and the environmental impact of efficient resource use were conveyed through practical examples by Prof. Dr. Nurdan Gamze Turan, Director of the Environmental Issues Application and Research Center at Ondokuz Mayıs Üniversitesi.

In another activity, titled “Purifying Water with Natural Materials,” students observed — through simple experiments — how dirty water can be purified by passing through physical, chemical, and biological processes. Participants built their own small-scale purification setups and learned the principles of water treatment, drawing attention to the importance of sustainable water use. This workshop was conducted by Prof. Dr. Feryal Akbal from the Environmental Engineering Department of Ondokuz Mayıs University.

A third workshop, “Let’s Calculate Our Carbon and Water Footprint,” taught students how to compute the environmental impacts of their everyday habits. Through interactive activities, energy consumption, transportation choices, water usage, and waste production — and their effects on climate change — were explained. This workshop was led by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Hülya Aykaç Özen, Deputy Director of the Environmental Issues Application and Research Center.

Over the course of the three workshops, students gained both awareness of environmental issues and practical knowledge for adopting more sustainable lifestyles. The events drew great interest from festival visitors and made a significant contribution to fostering environmental consciousness in younger generations.
