
Ondokuz Mayıs University rises 57 places in the 2025 UI GreenMetric World University Rankings
The results of the 2025 UI GreenMetric World University Ranking System have been announced. The ranking evaluates universities worldwide based on criteria such as environmental friendliness, energy and climate change, waste management, transportation, and sustainability.
Ondokuz Mayıs University (OMU) rose 57 places this year and became the 224th most sustainable campus in the world. Hosting a campus life in harmony with nature and ecological awareness, OMU ranked 27th among Turkish universities.
OMU ranked 224th among 1,745 universities in the 2025 UI GreenMetric
In the 2025 ranking, which evaluated 1,745 universities from 105 countries, OMU’s achievement stands out. By continuously increasing its efforts in sustainability, OMU is taking important steps toward becoming a green and environmentally friendly campus.
While OMU ranked 519th in 2021, it rose to 469th in 2022, 364th in 2023, and 281st in 2024. In 2025, the university climbed 57 places to reach 224th position.
The greenest universities in the world and in Türkiye
In the 2025 UI GreenMetric World University Rankings, the top three universities worldwide are:
Wageningen University (Netherlands) – 1st place
University College Cork (Ireland) – 2nd place
Nottingham Trent University (United Kingdom) – 3rd place
Among Turkish universities:
Istanbul Technical University ranked 25th worldwide and 1st in Türkiye
Yıldız Technical University ranked 48th worldwide and 2nd in Türkiye
Cyprus International University ranked 55th worldwide and 3rd in Türkiye

Rector Prof. Dr. Fatma Aydın commented on OMU’s rise in the 2025 GreenMetric results:
“This significant achievement in sustainability is the result of our determined efforts to build an environmentally conscious campus culture. The projects we carry out across a wide range of areas — from green space management to energy efficiency, from waste reduction to transportation policies — have contributed to OMU gaining a stronger and more visible position among world universities. This progress demonstrates how strongly we embrace our vision of being an environmentally friendly university.”
Emphasizing that sustainability efforts will continue without slowing down, Aydın added:
“OMU’s rise of 57 places to reach 224th position is the clearest indicator of our institutional commitment in this field. All units of our university are working together to create a more livable, greener, and more environmentally friendly campus. In the coming period, we aim to strengthen our environmental policies in line with national and international standards and make OMU one of the leading universities in sustainability.”
