An important panel discussion addressing environmental issues was held at Ondokuz Mayıs University (OMÜ) Kurupelit Campus, hosted by the Atatürk Congress and Culture Center. Organized by the Chamber of Environmental Engineers (TMMOB ÇMO), the event attracted significant interest from students, academics, and sector representatives.
The speakers included Prof. Dr. Perihan Binnur KURT KARAKUŞ, Head of the Environmental Engineering Department at Bursa Technical University; Ahmet KIRMIZI, Chair of the TMMOB Chamber of Environmental Engineers; Dr. Özcan ÇOLUK, Director of Atakum Municipality’s Climate Change and Zero Waste Department; and H. Cihan SIDAL, Director of Global Teknik Environmental Laboratory. The session was moderated by Prof. Dr. Gülfem BAKAN, a faculty member of OMÜ’s Environmental Engineering Department.
The event covered a wide range of topics, including current environmental problems, sustainability policies, the future of the profession, the role of environmental engineers in the field, and career guidance for young engineering candidates. Participants had the opportunity to gain valuable insights from experts in both academic and practical aspects of environmental management.
The panel also addressed issues such as the climate crisis, waste management, protection of water resources, recent changes in environmental legislation, and the development of environmental engineering in Türkiye. During the Q&A session, students were able to direct their questions to the experts and receive detailed answers.
At the end of the event, representatives of the TMMOB Chamber of Environmental Engineers emphasized the importance of such discussions for increasing professional awareness and strengthening student–professional chamber interaction, expressing their gratitude to OMÜ’s Environmental Engineering Department and all participants.
