Ondokuz Mayıs University (OMU) Department of Environmental Engineering, the Environmental Problems Research and Application Center (ÇEVSAM) and the Environment Community organized a meaningful event as part of Environment Week. At this special gathering held in a nursing home, students and academics not only drew attention to environmental awareness but also shared heart-warming moments with the elderly residents.
The event began with the planting of saplings in the nursing home garden. Each sapling placed into the soil with the aim of leaving a green legacy for future generations strengthened not only environmental awareness but also intergenerational bonds. The saplings planted by the elderly with their own hands became loving symbols linking the past and the future.
In her speech, ÇEVSAM Director and Head of the Environmental Engineering Department Prof. Dr. Nurdan Gamze Turan underlined the significance of the event, stating: “We wanted to celebrate Environment Week by reaching out not only to nature but also to society. Such gatherings help increase environmental awareness while at the same time enabling us to keep our values alive.”
With the impressive performances of Atakum Municipality Turkish Classical Music Choir Conductor and OMU Faculty of Fine Arts student Volkan Sağlam, his fellow student from the same department Eren Karadeniz, Prof. Dr. İbrahim Özkoç, our Environmental Engineering graduate Nuri Beyhan, and soloist Oya Verim, the nursing home garden was transformed into a concert venue. The songs performed with live music, the dances and the joyful moments shared warmed hearts and made the day truly unforgettable.
During the event, where small gifts and refreshments were also offered to participants, sincere conversations were established between young and old, and friendships were strengthened. This special event, befitting the spirit of Environment Week, touched both nature and the human heart and was etched in memories as an unforgettable day.
