As part of the EU-funded SHORE Project, the Department of Environmental Engineering at the Faculty of Engineering of Ondokuz Mayıs University (OMU) hosted students from Terme Secondary School. A delegation consisting of School Principal Hasan Tenkoğlu, teachers and students took part in a microplastic analysis activity conducted in the department’s laboratories. During the event, an experiment was carried out by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Hülya Aykaç Özen, Deputy Director of OMU ÇEVSAM and faculty member of the Department of Environmental Engineering, to draw attention to microplastic pollution in the seas. Before the experiment, Aykaç Özen gave an informative presentation to the students on the formation of microplastics, their environmental impacts and their current significance, particularly emphasizing the importance of raising awareness from an early age. Thanks to this hands-on activity, the students had the opportunity to gain both theoretical and practical knowledge about environmental pollution and the protection of the marine ecosystem. The academic staff, who worked closely with the students, stated that they aim to inspire the environmental ambassadors of the future.
