Ondokuz Mayıs University (OMU), which aims to raise awareness about climate change and transform into a structure where resources, especially energy, are used efficiently, waste is reduced, waste is recycled and carbon footprint is low, has prepared the "2021 Carbon Footprint Report".

The details of the prepared "2021 Carbon Footprint Report" were presented by Dr. from the Faculty of Engineering at the meeting in the Management Meeting Room within the Rectorate. It was announced by Hülya Aykaç Özen.

To the meeting; Rector Prof. Dr. Yavuz Ünal, Vice Rectors Prof. Dr. Recep Sancak, Prof. Dr. Cengiz Batuk, Prof. Dr. Selim Eren and Prof. Dr. Sevim Alışır and University General Secretary Prof. Dr. Hüseyin Gençcelep attended.

In the said report; The aim was to determine resource consumption and emissions, develop reduction strategies for these emissions, and increase internal awareness.

The report emphasizes that the negative impact of greenhouse gas emissions released into the atmosphere is inevitable, especially in institutions such as universities where the human population is large, and it is stated that calculating the carbon footprint at OMU and evaluating the results are of great importance in determining measures that will reduce the carbon footprint of the campus.

Calculations were made in light of the ISO standard

In the report, first of all, in order to calculate the greenhouse gas emissions belonging to OMU or related to the activities of OMU, greenhouse gas inventory scopes are determined and added to the inventory; The natural gas, electricity and water consumption of the campus, the amount of waste generated in the campus and the fuel consumption resulting from the activities of all transportation vehicles were included. Then, after OMU's activities that caused greenhouse gas emissions were determined, the University's carbon footprint was calculated by calculating direct and indirect greenhouse gas emissions according to the ISO 14064-1 standard.

Class 1 vehicles cause the largest greenhouse gas emissions in Kurupelit Campus

According to the data in the report, it was determined that the largest greenhouse gas emission among the total greenhouse gas emissions created by the Kurupelit Campus was caused by class 1 vehicles entering and exiting the campus, while the second largest emission source was due to electricity consumption.

For this purpose, studies have been initiated at OMU to prepare an action plan and take the necessary measures to reduce carbon emissions, which is one of the main causes of human-induced climate change, one of the most important problems in the world, for 2022 and beyond.
